I Scream, You Scream, We All Scream…

I really can’t believe how much discussion was generated by my earlier entry about “pining away” for someone.  It was a bit overwhelming.  I was getting IM’ed and emailed about it for days afterward.  Some (younger ones) were asking, “How do you know if a girl/guy likes you?” or “How do you get a girl/guy to like you?”

Well, I dug down deep into my chalice of wisdom and told them confidently, “I don’t know… if I did, I wouldn’t be here in front of the computer talking to you, probably… HAHA!”  Anyway…

The person who originally told me the quote which started this “tempest in a tea cup” later clarified that she meant it more in the sense of when the guy has already declared his feelings for her, and she didn’t feel the same way… in that case, the women want for them to just get on with their lives instead of pining away for them for naught.  However, if she were unaware of the pining, then it would be unreasonable for her to wish it away, if not also a bit cruel.

Then, oddly, we started talking about ice cream…

“See,” she said, “it’s like ice cream.  The girl wants chocolate, but then someone offers her vanilla.  Though she’s sure that the vanilla is a fine flavor, it’s just not for her.  She wants chocolate.”

“I see,” I replied, “so there’s no sense for the vanilla to wait around and melt all over the place trying to be eaten by the girl..”

“Exactly,” she answered.

“Well,” I interjected, “what if the vanilla covers himself in chocolate syrup, so to speak… I mean, it would TASTE like chocolate, right?”

“Ah but see, she’ll still know that deep down he’s still vanilla.  Silly vanilla, trying to be all shady.”

Right about this time I start craving some Ben and Jerry’s… not sure why…

“So, what if you’re Pralines and Cream?”  I asked (it was my favorite flavor as a kid), “I guess God could change her taste buds or something, haha!”

“You’re mixing analogies… quit it,”  she replied.

SO, anyway, I was at the store the other day.  I was in a rush because I was meeting someone for their guitar lesson in a little while.  I ran across the ice cream freezer… and I searched for my old favorite flavor… and searched and searched.  Hmmm… I guess no one really makes it anymore.  I guess it was a bit on the overly sweet side… I wonder if anyone else out there misses it?  Time was short, so I grabbed what I thought could be closest thing… Southern Butter Pecan (with butter roasted pecans)…. it’s not the same.

You know… I think more people would like Pralines and Cream, but I bet they never even tried it.  They probably just assume it will have a certain weird taste.  So they wind up sticking to the boring vanillas or strawberries because it’s safe.  There’s a whole world outside of Neapolitan… right?

  1. i like pralines and cream.  i don’t like neopolitan.  i also really really like mint chocolate chip in the summer — so refreshing!  a standby is also ben & jerry’s charry garcia — yum.  i guess i don’t have a favorite.  does this mean i’m compatible with lots of different types of guys?

  2. purreeease – pistachio, ginger, green tea, and coconut are the best. try something difference once in awhile.

  3. what’s this talk of icecream? i just had diddy reese for lunch! oh what’s that? you don’t HAVE diddy reese in the eastcoast? that’s too bad b/c i just had an icecream sandwich – a huge scoop of chocolate chip icecream in between two cookies. yuM!

  4. Mmmm… Ice Cream…
Mmmm… Pralines and cream ice cream….
Mmmm… Pistachio ice cream with sprinkles and hot fudge on the top…
    Mmmm… Hot fudge…

  5. Was that a not-so-subtle attempt at symbolism in that last paragraph?  =PI’ve always been a chocolate guy myself.  Of course, if you give me ice-cream, I’ll eat any flavor, but if I’m buying, it’s gotta be chocolate.  (I’m talking ice-cream here.)I think your analogy is accurate, to an extent.  If you don’t know what your flavor is, it’s best not to limit yourself to always getting the same flavor. On the flip side…Ice-cream doesn’t have feelings.  You can try all 31 flavors of BR, but if you know you’re a chocolate guy, you don’t want to mess around with vanilla’s feelings… especially when revenge is a dish best served cold.

  6. Wow, people sure are passionate about ice cream.  Haha!  Anyway, Snap360, in fact, that was supposed to be a so-obvious-that-it’s-supposed-to-be-taken-as-sarcasm bit of symbolism, but kudos for spelling it out for the rest of us.
Whoa, so who is this chocolate-loving guy who’s messing around with vanilla’s feelings?  Whoa, and who’s going to take revenge… for whom?

  7. Actually, to be honest, I wasn’t sure you were referring to yourself (with the symbolism).  It seemed a bit overly overt for your style, and it could well be taken as general symbolism representative of any non-neopolitan singles out there.
Haha… I was trying to figure out what you were getting at in the second part of your comment.  I think I know what it is now, but no, that’s not it.  Rest assured, if that were the case, I’d ever-so-gently advise him to stick with chocolate.

  8. hmm….. never tried Pralines and Cream.  🙂 but chocolate ice cream?! hmm….. not sure. For some reason, vanilla ice cream with chocolate syrup sounds really good right now… and i’m sick 🙁
