I was a part of a Secret Santa pool this past Christmas. The guy I had to get a gift for was notorious for not getting his assignment a gift at all in years past, so I was encouraged by everyone (including his best friends) not to get him a gift, just to pay him back for the years that he didn’t get anyone else anything. Well, I, believing in the spirit of Christmas, actually thought long and hard about it and decided to get him a gift that was actually twice the price limit set by the group – a leather bound study Bible.
I found out recently that, again, he had neglected to buy his guy anything. So in a stroke of brilliance (for him, I’m sure), without even unwrapping it, he secretly gave my gift to his guy. What the…
Yeah, I know… I set myself up for that one. So am I a fool for thinking that he could have changed? Perhaps. Do I have no one else to blame but myself for setting myself up for disappointment? Probably.
…but I’m not a total idiot.
Just inside the front cover, to add a personal touch… was written the following… in calligraphy…

Come on, you didn’t think I just fell off the turnip truck yesterday, did you? I was actually thinking about getting the cover embossed with his name because I didn’t think it was beyond him just ripping out the first page to hide his crime, but I didn’t have enough time. I like the guy he gave it to better anyway… I hope he enjoys it.
So let this be a warning to everyone out there. You should at least open your gift before re-gifting. The money and time saved on wrapping paper is not worth the potential embarrassment.

I don’t dislike him. He’s just supremely immature. For those of you who know [guy’s name], probably know that he had it coming to him. I think he actually spends time thinking of new ways to be inconsiderate. His best friends actually shook my hand when they heard what I did.
Sheesh! I knew a guy like that in college. It drove me insane. Good for you for doing what you did. People like that would really annoy me.
