Different Eyes

Recently my sister sent me an ultrasound picture of her baby over IM while telling me, “It’s got your nose, I think.”  Apparently they have this new technology where they can make a 3-D composite of the ultrasound so that it actually looks like someone took a photo of the fetus with a camera.  So I opened the file, and there he/she was (they don’t know yet).  Umm… to tell you the truth it looked more like Gollum than anything else, but I wasn’t about to tell her that…

“Wow, that’s not like any ultrasound I’ve ever seen before…” I replied (hoping she didn’t expect me to respond with “oh, how cuuuute!”)

“Yeah, a lot of people says it looks more like Jae (her husband), though…” she responded.

“Hmmm…” I answered, not really knowing how to respond

Then I think I tried changing the subject lest she ask me what I thought.  Which got me thinking… when potential parents see something like that, do they see something that we don’t see?  You always see on the TV shows when they show the ultrasound of the baby, the parents get all weepy and such, but not having gone through that, I never really understood it.  I guess when they look at that mass of flesh they see a lot more than I could possibly see because he/she is theirs.  That where I see a character from the Lord of the Rings, they see a beautiful miracle of life.  Maybe in an instant they see first steps, first words, sweet sixteens, and graduations in the hope that I guess all new parents have for their children.  Perhaps that is a lot to take in at once, and maybe they’re overwhelmed.

Maybe this is similar to what happens when we repent of our sins and accept Christ.  Because we are His, he sees us with different eyes.  He sees what the price of His son’s blood paid for.  We are spotless and blameless because of Christ’s sacrifice, and that makes all the difference.  So that even when the world continues to see us for the mis-shapen blob we were, God sees us as beautiful.  He sees that now we can have fellowship with Him and looks forward to an eternity with us in heaven.
